Homeowner Resources
Spokane Valley relies on the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer and the Spokane River for drinking water, recreation, and supporting local ecosystems. Protecting these vital resources from pollution ensures safe water for our community and future generations. Every small effort counts and starts right in our homes.
How to Protect Water Quality at Home
Every small effort counts. Here are practical steps Spokane Valley residents can take to protect our aquifer and river:
- Don’t overuse lawn and garden chemicals which can leach into groundwater or wash off into storm drains or nearby waterbodies from rain or overwatering.
- Dispose of waste the right way. Find out the best way to dispose of or recycle almost anything with the Spokane Kootenai Waste and Recycle Directory at www.spokaneriver.net/wastedirectory
- Pick up after your pets. Pet waste doesn’t just decompose but leaves behind bacteria and nutrients that are harmful to local waterways. Be a good neighbor and bring a pet waste bag, pickup after your furry friend, and dispose in the trash bin.
- Drain your pool and hot tub the right way. Pools and hot tubs contain harmful chemicals. See this informational flyer for more information on how to properly drain pools, hot tubs, and spas.
- Don’t drip and drive. If you see oil or other vehicle fluid stains in your usual parking spot, it probably means your vehicle needs some maintenance. Find out more here: Don't Drip & Drive Brochure
Homeowner Maintenance Responsibilities
Owners with swales on or adjacent to their properties are responsible for maintenance of these stormwater facilities. See our city’s maintenance guide on how to properly care for swales.
