City to Celebrate Investment in Barker Road Corridor
Spokane Valley, WA—The City of Spokane Valley will celebrate the extensive infrastructure investment throughout the Barker Road corridor at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, outside of the Barker Road Logistics Center located at 3610 N. Barker Road. Program speakers include City Manager John Hohman, Mayor Pam Haley, Senator Mike Padden, Councilmember and Freight Mobility Strategic Investment Board (FMSIB) Board Member Ben Wick and Cowles Real Estate Vice President of Acquisition and Development Doug Yost.
The City, along with project partners, has invested nearly $36 million into Barker Road north of the Spokane River. Improvements completed over the past four years include a new roundabout at Trent Ave. / SR-290; new bridge creating a grade separation of road and train tracks at BNSF; widened the road with turn lane; new multi-use path connecting Trent Ave. to the Centennial Trail; railroad signal modifications at the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) crossing; new sidewalk on E. Euclid Ave.; expanded sewer; and improvements to the water system, aquifer protection and stormwater infrastructure.
“The enhancements we've made to Barker Road are a significant step towards realizing a number of our City Council's established goals and priorities,” said Spokane Valley Mayor Pam Haley. “These improvements are more than just upgrades to our physical infrastructure; they represent our commitment to fostering a connected, safe and thriving community for all.”
The project will continue south of the Spokane River. While the roundabout at Sprague Ave. has already been completed, two additional roundabouts will be added at E. 4th and 8th Avenues to improve those intersections; the road will be widened and new sidewalks and a bike lane added; the two-lane bridge with be replaced with a new four-lane bridge; the two single-lane roundabouts replaced with two-lane roundabouts; and improvements will be made to the stormwater infrastructure. The City is currently seeking funding for this phase and the timeline is not finalized.
