Clean Buildings Act | Tier 2 (20,000 to 50,000 Square Feet) Building Compliance Costs/Cost Savings Survey
The 2019 Clean Buildings Act created energy performance standards for commercial buildings larger than 50,000 square feet . Washington state’s Clean Buildings Performance Standard is designed to secure energy efficiency opportunities. The buildings sector is the state’s second-biggest polluter behind transportation, accounting for 27% of statewide emissions. Investment in building energy efficiency is a cost-effective way to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Mandatory compliance of the Clean Buildings Act begins in 2026. The Clean Buildings outreach team is asking building owners and operators of Tier 2 commercial buildings to participate in a survey. Tier 2 covered buildings are those buildings that are 20,000 to 50,000 square feet and multi-family buildings over 20,000 square feet.
The Washington State Department of Commerce serves as the administrator for the Clean Buildings Performance Standard. Their consultant, Energy Systems Engineering, is seeking to help understand the costs and cost savings on Washington small businesses with this survey.
